Osteopathy
Osteopathy is a healthcare profession that utilises a patient focused, physical approach to restoring, maintaining and promoting physical and psychosocial wellbeing. Primarily treatments take the form of a manual therapy involving
massage, mobilisation and spinal manipulation for the treatment of Musculo-skeletal problems. Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment focussing on joints, muscles, ligaments, nerves and connective tissues and their relationship in well- functioning body mechanics and posture. Osteopaths combine a detailed knowledge
of human anatomy and function to identify not only the symptoms, but also the underlying causes of each problem.

Cranial treatment appears so passive, how do I know that anything is happening?
Observing cranial treatment can be compared to watching someone reading a book. From the outside nothing much appears to be happening but, if you are the one reading the book, you are transported into a rich world of structure, colour, depth and emotion. In a cranial treatment, an Osteopath is listening carefully to the body which can tell the story of what has happened to it and how it is trying to cope.
What sort of patients or conditions can be helped with cranial osteopathy?
This approach to Osteopathy can be used on every patient. Cranial Osteopathy is widely known for the treatment of babies but is equally effective for children, adults and the elderly.
What does cranial treatment feel like?
Cranial Osteopathic treatment is very gentle and relaxing. Most people become deeply relaxed during treatment and it is not uncommon for people to fall asleep.
Cranial Osteopathy is the name given to a subtle and refined approach to
osteopathy. Cranial Osteopaths use a highly trained sense of touch to feel subtle changes of tension and tissue quality in the living anatomy to diagnose areas of strain or dysfunction. Cranial Osteopathy senses areas affected by past events, such as old accidents and injuries. The body may have learned to compensate for a traumatic event or injury and the patient may be unaware that there is anything wrong, but the effects may still be present and relevant to current symptoms. By offering gentle and specific support, the Osteopath aims to return the tissues into a state of balance and release, to restore it to health.

Dry needling is a technique used by Acupuncturists and Physical Therapists such as osteopaths to treat Musculo-skeletal pain and movement issues. It is used as part of
a larger treatment plan that could include manual therapy, massage, stretches and exercises. During this treatment, a very thin, sharp needle is inserted through the skin to treat underlying myofascial trigger points.
Trigger points are knotted tender areas in the muscle which can be highly sensitive and painful when touched. Sometimes these trigger points may be near the site of
pain, other times they can be the cause of referred pain which is affecting another part of the body.
Dry needling works by decreasing tightness, increasing blood flow and reducing localised and referred pain.
Some people can experience mild discomfort during needling, some people don’t even feel the needle as it is so small. While the needle is in place, the therapist will
apply some stimulation techniques to maximise the benefits.

Reflexology is a touch therapy based on the theory that different points on the feet, lower leg, hands, face and ears correspond with different areas of the body. It can
help promote deep relaxation and wellbeing, reducing stress and optimising good health.
Reflexology can be used safely alongside standard healthcare to promote better health.
This treatment is available with our Osteopath Louise Cartwright, or with our Podiatrist Karen Carsen.
Podiatry is the modern name for Chiropody, which is a medical specialty that involves the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of conditions affecting the feet and
lower limbs.
The feet are the foundation of the Musculo-skeletal system and support the weight of the body. Treatment is available for a wide range of nail and skin problems of the foot. This includes surgery for ingrowing toenails, treatment of fungal nails, athlete’s foot, cracked heel, corns, calluses, verrucae and diabetic foot problems.
Chiropodists can also provide preventative treatment, such as orthotics for biomechanical dysfunction, and general footcare advice for all ages.
